5 Important Things to Do for Fall

The summer is departing and taking away the beach and long, warm nights. The season of apple cider and orange and golden leaves is here!

Besides buying pumpkins and mums, there are a few things to do to get your home ready for the coldest months of the year.

Here are 5 things to do when it is time for fall:

  • Yes, it’s time to get out the extra blankets and sweatshirts. However, one of the most important things on the to-do list to examine windows, doors, your attic, and other places that could produce drafts. Even the smallest cracks let heat out and let pests in! It is advised to get your home inspected by a professional, like the experts at Great Lakes Contracting Services. Professionals do a thorough inspection and can fix any leaks and cracks.
  • Winterize your air conditioner. Odds are, you won’t be cranking on the air anytime soon. By winterizing your unit, you can save yourself a lot of hassle down the road. You can get everything you need from your local hardware store. While you are at it, why not purchase a programmable thermostat? This can help with NIPSCO bills. Don’t forget to clean your humidifier, as well.
  • Make sure to keep up with the hundreds of leaves that blanket your lawn (or hire a neighborhood kid to do it!) Clean out your gutters and make sure all of your bushes, trees, and plants are trimmed.
  • Put away patio furniture and close up the pool. It’s also a good idea to remove any decorations (i.e. garden gnomes) for safe keeping. Anything not needed like the hose, swings, and summer toys should be stored in a clean, dry place.
  • It is smart to prepare for power outages. A generator is great for emergencies and if you have a fireplace or wood burning stove, stock up on some wood. Don’t forget to check your fire alarms to make sure they are in working order. In addition, a ready-made emergency kit including a stash of blankets, candles, flashlights, bottled water, and batteries is also great to have on hand.
